R.I.P., Blah Blah June 17, 2008

A little over two years ago, Nash convinced me to get him a new pet. We agreed on a beta fish that wouldn’t require too much work or expense and according the pet store peeps, would last longer than a gold fish. Nash named him Blah Blah. He fed him every day – for about three weeks. Then everyone including Vegas the cat just sort of forgot about him. But I changed his water twice a year regularly and threw a few pellets of food in when I remembered daily. He was a good fish and rarely caused any trouble. For all we know, he’s responsible for scaring off any potential burglars when we weren’t home. Well, last night when I got home from a long day at a work outing (on the Cape, with booze, lobsters and a side trip to Ikea) my MIL informed me via a note so the words did not have to be spoken out loud (she’s wicked smart like that) that Blah Blah had passed away. Even though I was sort of relieved to have one less thing to worry about every month day, I was a little sad. I mean, he’s been holding down that same section of the counter for over two years. Of course I did just get a bread keeper from Ikea that requires just about the same amount of space. Everything happens for a reason, right? (so going to hell….)

And of course you’re asking yourself “How did Nash take the news?”. Well, here’s the thing. When our dog Buddy died a while back, Jeff and I took the day to grieve and figure out how we were going to break the news to Nash. We picked him up from preschool that day and then just assumed when we got home, he would ask where Buddy was. But he didn’t. So we just sort of waited until he brought it up. TWO DAYS LATER he made a comment about Buddy being sick and said “But he’s going to OK, right?” Um…. So we told him he had died and it just became this little fact to him. One day I was at a class and and as he and Jeff were leaving the house he said to Vegas “You’re going to be all alone now because we’re leaving, mom’s at her class and Buddy’s dead”.

So now it’s sort of a game. How long until he notices? Days, weeks, months?? I’ll keep you posted…….

I admit it.  I’m one of those people that doesn’t really follow sports throughout the season but then gets mad crazy for it when it comes time for the playoffs.  It’s gotten worse since living in New England since we pretty much rock the MLB and NFL.  I’ve been to FIVE victory parades since Nash was born and he’s only five. So it’s really no secret that we rock.  But now it’s the NBA finals.  I’ve never watch a Celtics game.  Ever.  Until the first playoff game last Thursday.  Now I ‘m completely hooked and am dying for tonight’s game to start.  It doesn’t hurt that they’re playing the Lakers and the stands are filled with all sorts of celebrities.  Bonus!  Anyhoo, the geek that I am, today I had a total stranger take this photo of me with the giant championship trophy.   GO CELTICS!!!!

Nash brought home this awesome butterfly today:

I compliment him on how excellent it is.  He asks what my favorite part is. I tell him the coloring is great.  And I really like the antenna thingy but I think my favorite part is the blowy-out part.  To which he replies:

“Mom.  That’s the proboscis.  It’s like his mouth.  He uses it to drink nectar.”

 Duh.  Of course.

My sweet little boy June 10, 2008

Last night I noticed some “kids” skateboarding on the street next to our house.  They were working on some kicks and jumps or whatever they call that fancy footwork.   I thought Nash would get a kick out of it so we went out to watch.  That lasted about 5 seconds when he decided he HAD to get his bike out and join them.  So here are these 16-17 year olds, no helmets, one of them *gasp* smoking a cig and doing their tricks.  Then out bursts Nash from the garage on his Speed Racer bike with training wheels, helmet strapped tightly on thinking he’s just cooler than cool.  He takes off down the sidewalk and I swear he’s showing off.   These kids don’t bat an eye and probably didn’t even notice him.  But he was bursting with pride and happy to be out hanging with the gang.  Eventually they left and I convinced him to go back in the house.   I was so proud of my fearless, outgoing little guy.  I was also thankful that the big kids weren’t mean and didn’t tease him.

But I am going to find their mothers and to tell them about the whole smoking and not wearing a helmet thing.  And I’m sure next time I see them they’ll have helmets, knee pads and be wrapped in bubble wrap covered in anti-smoking messages.  At least that’s what I’d do if it were my kid……..

It’s only June and we’re already having our first heat wave. Joy! I don’t know why I bother “doing my pretties” as Nash calls it, since my face melts right off as soon as I step outside. Thank God for the Kerastase straightening products and a flat iron.

Whenever the weatherman uses the word “oppressive” I know it’s gonna be a bad, bad day.

How hot is it?

It’s so hot I’ve driven to work the past two days so I can stay in my A/C equipped car and not fry like an egg at the train station waiting for a train that I’m hoping has A/C.

It’s so hot we went to Kung Foo Panda this weekend just for the air conditioning.

It’s so hot, instead of cooking ordering in, we’ve been going out to dinner. To restaurants where there are other people. And surly waitresses.

Oh, and Nash’s new favorite toy is water balloons.

According to my obviously inappropriately positioned indoor/outdoor thermometer (not in the direct sun perhaps??), it was 108 here this weekend.

I’ll take a snowstorm over this crap any day.

Cooking for Leif June 7, 2008

I recently came across an “easy” recipe for Coq au vin and was reminded of yet another cooking attempt gone bad. This one dating back to my teen (or possibly pre-teen) years (further proof that I’ve been doomed in the kitchen my entire life) When I was a teenage girl I loooved me some Leif Garret. He was so dreamy…….

According to an interview in Tiger Beat, Leif’s favorite food was Coq au vin. So as a young girl, it was my mission to make sure that I could do anything possible to please my soon-to-be celebrity boyfriend. Obviously that meant learning to prepare this mystery dish. After all, we all know the way to man’s heart is through his stomach. (For the origin of that delightful proverb click here). Since this was pre-internet (can you imagine??) I have no idea where I found a recipe, but I found one somewhere and remember being shocked that Coq au vin translated to chicken in wine sauce. (Alcohol?? Oh, Leif. How could you?! We’re only teenagers!) Somehow I attempted this recipe on my own. I have no idea if my mom was in on the whole thing and helped with purchasing the ingredients or if I just went with what I could find. I do remember a lot of bacon grease and I think I used cooking sherry for the wine. There’s also a vague recollection of trying to figure out what to use as a substitute for this “cheesecloth” thing I needed.

I’m sure you know how this story ends. It was, of course, a disaster. Perhaps it was a sign because Leif didn’t turn out so good either:

I think in the end, my Coq au vin turned out better.

I love her, so it’s OK to laugh, right?  Besides, I’m just passing along the link.  It’s not like I made this website.  That person has a seat way ahead of me!
