I found this comb from the 80′s in my mom’s bathroom:

You can put hairspray IN THE COMB and then dude, you are so all set for night of feathering your hair.

After discovering our favorite restaurant in Pelican Rapids (The Muddy Moose) had closed, we ended up at their local cafe.  Jeff ordered the special which I think was meat, covered in bread, covered in mashed potatoes then smothered in gravy.  But my favorite part was that pickle on the side:

And it’s not too late to jump on a plane to be here by Friday the big festivities!

Just a couple of random thoughts thus far from vacationland…….

Don’t ask why your aunt just bought a minivan (after you’ve loaded all your luggage into it).  Because the answer might be “because it’s big enough to carry a deer carcass”.

If your kids sees another kid pee outside, they will immediately insist that they also have an emergency situation that 2 minutes ago, didn’t exist.

Peeing outside is awesome.

There are no iPhones in North Dakota.  AT&T doesn’t have ANY coverage in all of No Dak and “most” of Minnesota.  Although I beg to differ as I’ve traveled through most of Minnesota these past few days and have had service.   I feel like such a rock star with mine.

You can tell a 6 year old a hundred times to shut the door behind him when coming in and out of the house and he still won’t do it – until you tell him that if he leaves it open, snakes will get in the house.

If you fall asleep in the sun, you will burn.

Never agree to look at someone’s wedding photos unless you have no other plans for the rest of the night.

If you plan on eating at a Perkins restaurant, you better bring a credit card or some cash:

Oh, and just pretend you don’t see the old man in the diaper standing in the kitchen.  Just keep looking at the wedding photos……

Sand Sculptures July 24, 2008

I promised a few more photos of the Sand Sculptures from last weekend and thought that would be an easy post for a hungover vacationing gal.

Each competitor gets 10 tons of sand to work with and they have 28 hours over the course of 4 days to create.  And with that they make this:

Or this:

Or maybe even this:

And we noticed they all had these wires sticking out at the tops and wondered what in the heck they were for.  Wanna guess??

They’re to keep birds from landing on them and ruining them.  So there you go, learn something new every day.

I’ll leave you with this one and let you make up your own caption.  Mine would go something like “Wonder Woman, Captain America old and scared shitless, Gay Batman, Spiderman fell in hole, Superman on acid (and what the hell is the thumbs up all about?) with embarrassed Ironman.”  But that should be way funnier based on the photo, but seriously, I just ain’t got it in me.

Nash has had quite a fun filled weekend!  It’s still going on now with his BFF Max over for a play date.  They are insane and do not ever stop.  Let’s play Wii!  Let’s play Speed Racer!  Let’s play Legos!  Let’s draw!  Let’s Color!  Can we have a snack?  Where’s the cat?   (Trouble if it’s Max asking.  He loves to torture Vegas)  Now they’re building something with the train tracks.  I can’t walk through my living room.  Who will put it all away???

Earlier he went to yet another birthday party. I scored big points with Nash by obtaining Elizabeth’s [mom's] e-mail address.  Nash looooves this girl and is constantly asking if I have her address so he can write to her.   I know scoring a chick’s e-mail for your six year old son probably isn’t the coolest thing a mom can do, but it was all worth it for the look on his face when I showed him the piece of paper with the info.  So he sits down at the computer to write her and asks how to spell “sended”.  Like my last post, we had another argument as he did not believe that it should be “sent”.  I asked what the sentence was and he said “Max sended me a message”.   Then I had to explain that Elizabeth might not really care so much about the fact that Max SENT you a message and maybe you should tell her it was fun seeing her at the party, you liked her swimsuit or you can’t wait to see her in camp at the end of August.  Cuz those are the kinds of things girls might want to hear.  To which he replied “No mom.  You’re wrong.”  After about 10 minutes, he walked away from the computer so I looked to see what he had written and here’s what it said:

Elizabeth   I

That’s it.  Dude is speechless and it’s kind of cute.

Yesterday we went to Walking With Dinosaurs.  For those of you that don’t know what this is, it’s a “live” show based on a BBC series that features lifelike dinosaurs all walking around hanging out.  It was pretty cool and Nash [eventually] loved it.  Here’s a video of him giggling at the Tyrannosaurus Rex.  Because nothing’s funnier than a six ton carnivore coming right at you.

We spent the rest of the *hot* afternoon at the pool.  So worth the $6 yearly fee!    And this morning we headed to Revere Beach to see the sand sculptures.   I’ll post more photos later, but here’s a taste:

And for the record, the boys have just made a weapon with a broom, bungee cord and fly swatter.  It has to end soon……..

I don’t want to give away any surprises for potential upcoming posts, but Nash is going to be in a parade next weekend and he’s wicked excited.  In preparation for the event he wanted to establish some rules for decorating the vehicle that he will be riding in/on (yes, I am already stressed that he wants to ride ON not IN).  He got out his whiteboard (clearly channeling Tim Russert) and asked me how to spell a couple of words, but then this happened:

Nash: How do you spell “Hast”?

Me: What do you mean “Hast”?  What’s the sentence?

Nash: Like “It hast to be on a car chair”

Me:  Oh, that’s actually two words “has” “to” be on a car chair.

Nash:  No it’s not, it’s just “hast”.

Me: Um, no.  I’m pretty sure you mean “has to”.

Nash (looking at me like I’m certifiably insane): Then YOU write it.

So I did.

So for those of you getting ready for the parade, please note that first you have to draw on a piece of paper and next it hast to be on a car chair.  Duh.

Yesterday we took Nash to his first real grown-up musical, Grease.  Salem State’s Summer Theatre has six performances over the next two weeks and I’ve been looking forward to taking Nash since I first heard it would be there.  I’ve never seen the musical and honestly can’t even remember the first time I saw the movie (but have seen it at least a bajillion times in my life) but I can’t remember ever not having the soundtrack.  I had the LP (that’s an album, kids.  You know, a record?  Round vinyl thing with grooves??….ask your parents), cassette and eventually CD and can sing every word to every song on it.  It was definitely the soundtrack of my youth.   I had no idea what Nash would think of all this 30 years later, let alone be able to sit still for two and a half hours.  Well, I’m happy to report that he looooved it!!    A few of my favorite quotes:

Nash: “Can we always come here?”

Me: “No, it’s just here for six days.”

Nash (moments later): “Is it here every July?   Can we come next July?” (dude loves his “traditions”)

Me: “Nope.  This is it.  So shhhh, and enjoy it.”

Me & Jeff (at intermission): “Do you want to stay for the second half or do you want to leave?”

Nash: “Why the hell would we leave if it’s not done?  This is the greatest thing EVER.” (or some variation of that)

Nash (during dance scene): “What celebration is this?”

Me: “It’s called Prom.”  (not officially but really the concept of a dance off competition seemed impossible to explain in the dark with Born To Hand Jive playing)

Nash:  ”I can’t wait for high school so I can have prom.”  (Little does he know that thanks to Aunt Paula’s brilliant idea that will involve him and his date being stuffed into the blue chair)

So dude was a complete champ, lasted through the whole thing and freaking loved it.  As soon as we got home he had to draw a picture of it.

It’s actually a pretty good replication of the stage set up with all the ramps and what not.  That’s Danny and Sandy up on top.  The purple square on the top right is the box the house band was playing from.  All those dots are the audience members.  I love that the stick girls are all wearing skirts but my favorite is the bottom left.  That purple person is “an actor coming out of the bathroom”.  I must have missed that part.  Maybe it’s Rizzo when she thought she was pg…..

That was a quote from Brandi C. on I love Money, VH1′s new train wreck that I’ve gotten myself sucked in to.  Just when I thought they had come up with everything, they’ve gone green and recycled.  They’ve taken 15 of the “best” rejects from three different looking-for-love shows (Flava Flav, Brett Michaels and New York – ‘nuf said) and brought them on a new show, in a new house, with a new prize – $250,000 cash money.

The season preview looks to be every bit as addictive as Rock Of Love was for me.  The mix of people range from cocky, slutty, ditzy, mildly retarded to just plain insane.   With names like 12 pack, Heat, Mr. Boston, Pumkin, Rodeo and Toastee (and of course the already mentioned Midget Mac and Nibblz) I think I’ve found my summer guilty pleasure.

Oh, and you’ll be glad to know that “Whiteboy” DID pick Brandi C and **spoiler alert**  Midget Mac was sent packing.

Watch Him Grow July 11, 2008

Once I could prop him up, I started taking weekly photos of Nash in the same blue chair so we could watch him grow.   It started out something like this….

And a few months into it, he looked something like this:

This is how week 52 ended up and I figured this would be the end of the show:

But alas the documentarian in me insisted the show must go on so now every year on his birthday, I drag out the chair for an annual photo.  Here’s year 2, sharing the spotlight with Vegas:

Year 3 I let him pick his own outfit.  Um, possible mistake:

Year 4 was pretty darn cute.  It was the “don’t ever put down Thomas” and “Clifford Rules” phase:

Year 5 was on our way out the door to NASCAR.  Really.

And here we are six years later.  The chair had to be dug out of the attic of the garage only to be put back a few days later.

If I have my way (and you know I will) I will be stuffing a grown man into this chair in his tuxedo on his wedding day….
